My name is Turat, and I am a person of the forest. I was born in the Mentawai rainforest and grew up in a traditional uma, learning the skills my family has passed down for generations — how to build a longhouse by hand, how to process sago step by step into the food that sustains us, and how to read and live with the forest around me.
Unlike many guides, who come from Padang or other towns on Sumatra, I am truly from here: this is my home, my family, and my way of life. I share all of it openly — our customs, our traditions, and the stories of my people — and because I speak English, we can talk directly, with nothing lost between us. Travelling with me also means more of what you pay stays in the community, shared fairly among the local families who host you, far more than with the bigger companies selling the same trips. With me, you don't just see Mentawai — you step into the real life of the forest and the people who belong to it.
